Description
From the Peat, to the Palm: The Bog Oak Heart Necklace
In the quiet depths of Ireland’s ancient bogs, time stands still. Buried for thousands of years beneath layers of sphagnum moss and silt, fallen oaks have slowly transformed into something extraordinary: Bog Oak. This is not merely wood; it is fossilized history, carbon-dated to an age when myth and landscape were inseparable. Each piece is a survivor—darkened to a deep, velvety charcoal by millennia of anaerobic preservation.
We are proud to introduce the Bog Oak Heart Necklace, a tactile emblem of endurance and love, handcrafted by Richard in the Pigs Wood Workshop. Unlike mass-produced jewelry that sacrifices character for convenience, every step of this necklace’s journey is personal.
Richard begins by sourcing locally recovered bog oak—harvested sustainably from Irish peatlands after natural weather exposure. Using only hand tools and fine-grit abrasives, he shapes the rough, prehistoric timber into a perfectly imperfect heart. No two are identical. Some retain subtle grain lines; others show the mysterious, mineral-rich stains of their long burial. The result is a pendant that feels alive—smooth to the touch, surprisingly light, and organically warm against the skin.
This unique heart is then suspended on a high-quality 925 sterling silver snake chain, 40cm in length. The snake chain is chosen for its fluid, scale-like texture and secure clasp, offering a sleek, contemporary contrast to the ancient pendant. The cool silver offsets the deep, smoky darkness of the bog oak, creating a piece that works equally well with a linen shirt at a wedding or a wool jumper by a winter fire.
Wearing this necklace is a quiet act of connection—to Irish soil, to the hands that shaped it, and to the slow passage of deep time. It arrives nestled in eco-friendly packaging, ready for gifting to an artist, a history lover, or anyone who believes that true beauty is never rushed.
Wear the past. Hold the heart.
