Description
The 1st edition Ordnance Survey of Ireland, conducted from 1824 to 1846, was a landmark project, being the first comprehensive large-scale mapping of an entire country. Overseen by Major General Thomas Colby and assisted by Lieutenant Thomas Larcom, the survey aimed to produce maps at a scale of six inches to one mile. This level of detail was unprecedented and provided an accurate representation of Ireland’s landscape, including every small house and cabin present before the Great Famine.
The primary purpose of this extensive mapping effort was to update land valuations for taxation purposes. The resulting maps are renowned for their precision and are still highly regarded today. The Ordnance Survey Office, established in 1824, spearheaded this initiative, which required meticulous fieldwork and the compilation of comprehensive cartographic data.
The maps were engraved and printed in with black ink before being individually hand coloured to highlight rivers and townland boundaries.
