Description
A seed in flight. Handcrafted in Ireland by Ruth at DANU Ceramics, these cut brass earrings capture the delicate silhouette of an ash or sycamore key—the winged seed that spirals down from towering trees each autumn. With a secure stud-style top and a gracefully swinging brass pendant, they are botanical jewellery for those who find beauty in life’s smallest architectures.
Ruth begins with sheets of raw brass, then hand-cuts each pendant using a jeweller’s saw. The shape is unmistakable: a slender central seed body, flanked by one elongated wing—just like the samaras that children whirl into the air. Depending on the design, the wing may be smooth, subtly pierced, or lightly textured with a hammer to mimic the seed’s natural veining.
The pendant hangs from a stud-style top—a small, comfortable brass post with a flat disc backing that sits flush against the earlobe. This design keeps the earring secure while allowing the seed pendant to swing freely with every turn of the head. The connection between stud and pendant is often a tiny hidden jump ring, giving the seed a full range of motion.
Each earring measures approximately 60mm in total drop (including the stud), with the seed pendant itself spanning 25–30mm from tip to wingtip. Over time, the brass will develop a warm, organic patina—echoing the natural ageing of fallen seeds. If you prefer a bright, golden shine, a gentle polish returns its original lustre.
Because every seed is cut, filed, and finished by Ruth’s hand, slight variations in wing shape, edge softness, and surface texture are not flaws—they are signatures of Irish craft. No two seeds are identical, just as no two falling leaves ever drift the same way.
Wear them as a tribute to woodland walks, to the patience of trees, or simply to the poetry of a single seed suspended from your ear.
